A view of the yard of the Western House of Refuge, a juvenile reformatory along Backus Street on the city's northwest side. Construction of the main building, shown here, began in 1847 and the institution opened in 1849. A wall 22 feet high surrounded the 42 acre site. In addition, an eight foot high wall was constructed through the center of the yard in 1869 in order to separate the younger boys (shown here on the right) from the older boys (shown here on the left).
