You know, I'm always trying to find out what new events in the world of asylum history is going on out there. Sadly, I don't have all the connections as others that I would like. So I don't hear about some events that have happened. That's ok because I know that there are hundreds of other people out there who are in the same boat as I am.

Heck, when I read about this [1] in Kirkbride's forum I was flabbergasted that I didn't hear about it. That event would have been something I would have love to go to if I could. I also know that there are many others who would have liked to have gone if they could, or at least knew when it was going to happen.

So I realized that each of us knows at least a couple events that are going on. Whether because they are going to participate in it themselves or had heard of it through the internet, emails, instant messages, Facebook, twitter, newspaper, friends who work or have worked at these institutions, and so on and so on.

What we need to do is to post the events we know about. I don't care if it's an event all the way across in California or Alaska, if we hear of an event, we should post it. If say, we hear about a moving exhibit, then we should post the areas and times that exhibit would be shown, etc.

I know that the calendar might be confusing to some and that's ok. Sadly, I couldn't make it any simpler or user friendly then what it is now without messing lots of stuff up! But, that does not mean you cannot post a note about an event up in the message boards.

So my point is, if you know of an event and want others to know about it, post it, let us know. I don't care if it is a history walk through, cemetery clean up, photo shoot, whatever. Post it and let us know. If you don't know how to work the calendar, don't worry just post it, I or someone else will add it to the main calendar.

So my point is: post events that you want us to know about, don't be stingy, don't hold back, just post it!

Weston State Hospital, aka T.A.L.A. is running thier annual haunted asylum tours for the entire month of Oct. Last year they held a good bit of it in the TB Ward, which normally wan't open for tours. I'll keep you posted if I can find out exactly where this years tour will be, it's being billed as "Ward 24". In the mean time check out this link for info. on the haunted house:

Both of those look cool. While I won't be able to go to the ESH open house (which I'm bummed about because I'll be in school at that time.), I hope i can make a WSH tour.

Oh, I had to rename the ESH entry. I realized that the entry was not showing up on the calendar and when I looked at the name, it seemed right. So after some thinking and looking at other entries I realized that single digit days (I.E. 1,2,3,4,5...) should be expressed as single digits. For example: 10-3-10, 11-6-10, etc.

Either way, cool entries.

Will that be just a local documentary or a nation wide thing? I ask because I live in NY and really would like to watch it.

If they go through with closing the facilities in IL I'm going to try and get tours. I'll post back if and when it is the case. I have a couple connections, but it may end up being more of a shoot the outside type deal :/

There are a couple facilities up there that I'd drive the distance to see if I'm able to!

I'll keep you posted and see what I can find out. Right now the committee ruled that closing them isn't going to save much money, but the state has not restored funding so the closing will happen without budgetary changes, nearest I can tell.

The only ones that might close I'd want to see would be Jacksonville & Chester. If Dixon has any old buildings left that one as well but I don't know what's left at any of these 3. Tinley Park only has a handful of buildings and they are fairly bland 1950s/60s construction.
