Back in the early 1980's I used to work at the Clarinda Treatment Center, in Clarinda, Ia.. The southwest end of the Hospital had been remodeled, and looked very modern inside. Where as the northeast end of the Hospital wasn't used, and still had the original architechture exposed like the fireplaces they used for heat on the wards.
Once I was sent out to look for a missing Pt., and my search led me into this older section of the Hospital. (It was at the time undergoing its' own remodeling session.) But it was like stepping back into time to see the drastic difference from the two ends of the Facility. I am so glad I had the opportunity to have a glimpse into the past of that facility, as I searched for the missing Pt..
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Hmm.. yea I have, though not as a worker. I've been in various institutions where I've seen the newer sections with more modern facilities and then headed into buildings that had been closed for a long time and seen how the facility looked back before modern touches. The one I remember the most was Norwich. There were some buildings that looked just as it did in the 90's and then there were buildings on that campus that had been closed while the campus was active, sealing it up almost like a time capsule.

Yeah, at Weston they went through numerous renovations (putting in drop ceilings, HVAC, etc.). In lots of places you could get an idea of the original building. I helped out once and pulled up some nasty looking circa. 1960's carpet and were surprised to find some really nice vintage tile work underneath that I think was probably from the turn of the century!

The facility I work in now, has a lot of tile work in it, as well as slabs polished rock that I'm assuming are colored marble that line the lower walls of the Administration bldg's hallways. There are a lot of nice marble fireplaces also in that section of the hospital. With the main Administration hallways' ceiling being about 15 ft high. Gives a big and roomy feel about it's self!
Some of the out buildings had brick fireplaces that were used for heat on those wards.
They try to house other services in the out bldgs, to keep good use of those spaces, rather than letting them decay from neglect. Though they have one large out bldg with large wooden columns on the front, that has been allowed to decay. It's a shame they didn't value that bldg. As it was a neat bldg, in it's day!

Eastern State in Lexington has a little known old tunnel that they basically tossed some old junk into it and sealed it off with steel doors.

I've always thought Clarinda was a model for how former state hospitals should have been reused. It's nice that we have someone here from there.

Also, I found this photo that shows the tile floor I mentioned in the first post.

If I knew how to post pics.
I would take pics of the tile work at the facility I work at now, and post them here. But I don't understand the process for posting pics.
Could I email the pics to someone here who could post them for me?

You can send images to me: [email protected]

Uploading and posting images to the database is rather easy, especially if the article already has an image gallery. (For example: Buffalo State Hospital Image Gallery) Everything I am going to tell you can be found here and here in more detail.

  • To uploaded an image: to the left of the web screen is a box called toolbox. In that box is a link named upload file, click on that.
  • You will be presented with an upload screen. In the source file name, click on browse and go to the folder in your computer that has the digital image you want, then select it. If you want to fill out the summary you can do it here, but don't worry if you do not fill it out then because you can always go back and change it later on. (Also note: make sure that the image is under 1200 pixels in it's maximum length/width and that it is under 2mb in size)
  • Hit the upload file button once you are satisfied.
  • Once the image is uploaded you will be presented with a page containing the image.
  • At the top of the image page you will see the name of the image presented like this: file:image.jpg copy this name.
  • Go to the image gallery where you would like to place the image in, find the correct section you want, then hit the edit link either to the left of the gallery, or at the top of the page. Then paste the name of the image (I.E. file:image.jpg) between the <gallery></gallery> tags. Once you have, hit save and you have uploaded and posted the images.
