I was also a patient at Traverse City State Hospital in the 60's. Ron and I were there (Hall#18) at the same time.

Welcome to the new Wiki guys! I know I already said it once on the old site, but I will say it again. I have been following your posts on Kirkbride Buildings and your website from the beginning and it has been really interesting to read about your experiences at TCSH.

i am a twenty-four year old traverse city native, born n raised. i would just like to take the time to thank the prior patients, ron larson in particular, of the tcsh for being willing to share his experience there so many years ago. as a local i have always heard rumors, mostly of hauntings and horrible stories which im not sure of their validity of doctors shackling n torturing the patients there. ive always been curious about the past there. it wasnt until today, reading your web page viewing your photos, that i felt like ive actually learned about the facts of how it was. i can sense your heartache and tortured spirit, possibly hate n resentment surrounding how you wound up there in the first place, and of course the years of your life spent there. i am by far your junior and am sure, despite my personal trials, have never encountered anything close to your six years spent there. all i know is that everything truly does happen for a reason, and i will hope and pray for your healing and discovery of what the hell that reason was in the first place. God only knows. Maybe you were meant to go there to avoid other possible tragedy or abuse 'outside'...maybe you were protected from something without ever realizing it. maybe you were meant to know that sadness and loneliness and misunderstanding so that later in life God could use you, put you to work in helping others.. one thing i do know (by means of having lived it) is that when things seem unjust, wrong, upside down n inside out, God knows the reason.he makes no mistakes. its up to us to trust in him. it hurt me to hear you make the statement that you started a company with an illusion of being something you cant. possibly your endeavor dead ended simply because it is not your true purpose. maybe you havent found it yet. one thing i do know from personal experience (and im sure you do too) is that drug use only clouds our paths and separates us from our true meaning and prevents us from fulfilling our true potential and therefor discovering true peace and happiness. its merely a bandaid on an infected gaping wound. i hope that you wont live the rest of your life internally saddened and removed and faithless. what happened to you is terrible, and not right or okay by any means. but it happened, theres no changing or rearranging that. you can heal.whether you believe you can or can't you are absolutely right. from my perspective six years of your life is awful enough to have been stolen. only you can decide how many more years your willing to allow tcsh steal away forever. May God bless you in all ways and i hope that i have not offended or come across as presumptious because i by no means am claiming to have any clue how you feel. i only know what you say of course. i just know i dont like to know anybody is sad and so felt compelled to at least try n do what i can. wishing you much love peace and happiness.

I've been looking to fill in the Grand Traverse Sanitarium's information but every time i search for information I get redirected to the Traverse City State Hospitals pages. Does anyone know if they shared facilities or were housed on the same grounds? I have found no evidence to suggest this but I find the redirects quite odd. i will dig more, but if anyone has seen otherwise it might be helpful in doing the research. So in doing more digging I also get a redirect for Bronson Sanitarium, I think this may have been the name for Grand Traverse before it was Grand Traverse. [1] locally held picture c. 1910 at the Kingsley city library can be found at the link. Search of the whole collection for reference to sanitariums also turned up more pics that can be viewed here [2]

It seems Grand Traverse Sanitarium was a private hospital from 1901 till it burned in 1915. It was apparently the only medical hospital in the area. At that point Dr. Munson created a hospital in a former patient cottage at Traverse city.

A larger hospital opened named the James Decker Munson Memorial Hospital in 1926. It still operates in a new facility down the street from the Kirkbride called the Munson Medical Center.

thank you, the redirects were confusing. I will look at the books when I get home and try and fill some more in here soon. I will probably end up creating a separate page for the Bronson Sanitarium than too. Looks like it was a private sanitarium built some time around the 1880's.

What Really Happened
I want to know what really happened, I dont care about the good stuff. I want to know all the bad things, the memories that haunt you. I am a big history buff and I have a thing for scary stuff. What did they do to people that acted out, I mean it didnt take much to be put in the Hospital. Like did they do an experiments on people and such.... Because the things I have heard make it sound like something out of a horror story.

Ron "here again"
Just thought I'd check in, again after all these years.
I am still doing very well, the bad dreams are gone and I am finally free.
Thanks for all the kind words.

Depends what time period you're talking about. Throughout most of the 1800s & early 1900s there were many reasons for someone to be committed, most by today's standards are not even mental illnesses. Some of the common ones listed in annual reports for various hospitals in the 1830s-1870s were mania, lunacy, idiocy & epilepsy. I recall seeing old records that mention "religious excitement" & it wasn't uncommon for a husband to wife his wife declared insane & have her committed instead of divorcing her. A large percentage were older people that were elderly people and at a time when there were few nursing homes or understanding of dementia & Alzheimers for many years after.

why patients were interred at Traverse City State Hospital
Dakota. I am 73 now. I grew up in the Traverse City area. One day -- probably in the 1950s the sherrif came to my house, hand cuffed my mother and dragged her off to the State Hospital at Traverse City. She spent most of the rest of her life there.

Why? Im not really sure. As noted above, husband's did have their wive's committed instead of divorce. My mother's behavior was a little strange. The remaining members of the family generally agree that she had thyroid issues--had a goiter removed and never had any medication. He illness was classified as "schizophrenia".

Good luck with your paper.

Trying to Find My Great Grandfather
I have been working on family history and I am trying to find information about my Great Grandfather who was a patient at the hospital when he died in the 1950's. Does anyone know if it is possible to see a patient census or something of the sort anywhere?
