My name is Gary and I am an local historian on the old Columbus State Hospital that was located here in Columbus, Ohio. I am also a collector of memorabilia of the hospital also. I enjoy talking about the hospital and sharing my collection with those who are interested in the past history. It is a shame that the hospital was torn down, there is only one building left from the original Asylum.

I've asked this on Kirkbride Buildings some time ago but no one has yet replied so I'll ask here. Does anyone have pictures of the Kirkbride during the late 80's or right before it was torn down. I'm just curious how well it was holding up before the state tore it down.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have heard the kirk was in quite poor shape. The most recent images I have seen of the kirk are in the 1940s training video on YouTube. I took some screen shots...

The only thing I really notice is that the steeple on the center tower of the admin has been removed. Other than that a few small decorative things look to be missing. The "fencing" above on top of the corner towers on the admin looks to be gone, as well as the flag pole on the left tower.

When the main builing was torn down around 1990, it looked nothing like the pictures I see here, all of those white pillars right at the entrance were gone, they were also removed before I started working there in 1972. The building itself held up fairly well, they never took care of the roof when it needed repair, which lead to leaks and cracks all over the building.

As I stated earlier, I worked at the Columbus State Hospital, and I was there when they tore it down. One of the things that I was able to get from the salvage of the building was a star. These stars are located on the front on the building and they ran thru the entire building. They were desisgned to keep the building from buckling, the stars were attached to a long rod that ran from the front of the building to the rear. if you look at some of the closeup of the Administration building, you can see these stars.

I want to share with everybody about a letter that I received last week. There was a letter dated 1844 from a patient at the Lunatic Asylum of Ohio (later known as Columbus State Hospital). The patient had written a letter to his mother in Marietta, Ohio. This letter is very well written very religious person. I did some research on this person and found that he was a preacher and so was his father. I am still doing more research to find out how long he was there.

That's a good example of why we tell relatives asking the state for info to ask if there are any letters in the patient's file. Sometimes those letters can tell you so much more then anything a doctor wrote!

My mother was there a few times. I believe she recieved her first shock treatments in Columbus. She was in Dayton State and Athens as well. She bounced in and out until they shut down the state institutions. About 10 years ago a private facility in Dayton put her in a coma via medication and now she can hardly walk. She is over 70 and in another private care facility near Dayton. Not all bad as these facilities were better than doing nothing.
