I thought there was a thread on here about asylum related books but I can't find it so I'm starting this.
What I'm doing is posting by list of books that I own. The one's with a "*" indicate ones that I have read. I can give a review if asked or answer any questions anyone else has about any of the books.
Here are the books in my personal collection:
-Madness A Brief History, Roy Porter
- * The Attendant's Guide, Edith Stern 1945
-A Man Against Insanity, Paul De Kruf 1957
-The Discovery of the Asylum, David J. Rothman
- * A Short History of Weston Hospital, Joy Stalnaker
-The Art of Asylum-Keeping, Nancy Tomes
- * The Farm Colonies, Leo Polaski
- * Danvers State Memoirs of Nurse in the Asylum, Angelina Szot
- * Traverse City State Hospital, Chris Miller
-Pennsylvania Hospital, Annual Report 1906
-State Mental Hospitals: What Happens When they Close, Paul Ahmed 1976
-The Lobotomist, Jack El-Hai
- * Asylum: A Mid-Century Madhouse and Its Lessons about Our Mentally Ill Today, Enoch Callaway, MD
-Quest for a Cure: The Public Hospital in Williamsburg, VA 1773-1885, Shomer Zwelling
- * The Asylum: Photographic Essay, Shaun O'Boyle
- * Abandoned Asylums of New England, John Gray and Mark Gerrity
-America's Care of teh Mentally Ill: A Photographic History, William Baxter
- * Angels in the Architecture, Heidi Johnson
- * Haunted Palace: Danvers Asylum as Art and History, Michael Ramseur
-Madness in America, Lynn Gamwell
- * Worcester Annual Report, 1885
- * Worcester Annual Report, 1886
- * Worcester Annual Report, 1887
- * Metropolitian State Hospital Annual Report, 1934
-The Arcitecture of Madness, Carla Yanni
-General Report on all State Institutions in WV, 1909
-General Report on all Staet Institutions in WV, 1912
-The Medical Clinics of North America Vol. 34, 1950 (from the Macdonald Library at Danvers. Binded by Northampton State Hospital Industrial Therapy Dept.).
- * The State and the Mentally Ill, A history of Worcester State Hospital, Geral Grob
And my most prized is: Lobotomy: Collective Reprints 1936-1954, Walter Freeman.

I think we had a list on the old forum. I don't really read annual reports that closely, most tend to be pretty cut & dry with lots of numbers & statistics to impress politicians. The really old ones sometimes had more interesting narratives though, but they're harder to find.
Some good books you've listed. I'll add some when I get a chance this weekend.

-Voice for the Mad: The Life of Dorothea Dix by David L. Gollaher
-A Generous Confidence: Thomas Story Kirkbride and the Art of Asylum-Keeping, 1840-1883 by Nancy Tomes

Most of what you guys listed I've read or haven't but thanks to you guys I've got to go on a buying spree and stock my liberty with more books.
I'm not sure either what happened to that post, but here is our book category of every institution entry that's got a book: Category:Asylum Books

| My collection is small compared to those, but it has still managed to exceed the space I have to store it. Time to hit up Ikea for some new book shelves!

I just found the book "Phychiatric Architecture" published in 1959 by the APA. Its neat to see the thinking for why buildings of that period were built as they were.
