I'll get this started. I got interested in state hospitals growing up in Chicagoland with an uncle at Manteno & CSH in Indiana. Since then I've made visits to several state hospitals & currently the president of the Eastern State Hospital Preservation Project in Lexington KY.

Howdy,
Let me quickly introduce myself again. I'm M-Explorer and I first got into state hospitals back when I was in the Navy and was stationed at Groton, CT. I had a kidney stone and the base medical staff sent me over to Norwich to get it taken care of. Being a typical sailor, I took the long way home on RT 12 and saw a whole bunch of abandoned buildings on either side of the road. I did some research and found that they were the late Norwich State Hospital. That research soon lent to my fascination of state hospitals.

Hello, my name is Phil and I'm addicted to Kirkbrides . I have always been interested in history, when I was a child in middle school I was completely fascinated with the Titanic. My interest in architecture and old buildings started a bit later, when I came across a huge abandoned shoe factory while riding my bike one day. I will honestly admit that where I am now is a result of a few years back when I came across some photos of an abandoned building on the internet at work. From there I started exploring and that led to a deeper interest in state hospitals. I'm not completely sure why, perhaps it's the grand architecture or the fact that I wanted to know what used to go on in the buildings that I was photographing. Either way, I began to research Pennsylvania and Maryland state hospitals. I have visited many of the hospitals in both states and I have also created dedicated websites to some of them. http://www.thomas-industriesinc.com/

Hello -
Growing up in Arkansas, Texas, and then Kansas gave me a special perspective of mental hospitals, since our family lived on state hospital grounds until I was 12 - being the child of a psychiatrist who worked in these hospitals. The three hospitals of which I speak are all the cottage plan type. Last year, my husband and our family were able to tour the one in Arkansas and this began a desire to learn more about all such institutions. We have some photos that might be interesting, but I am not sure how to post them. The 3 locations are Benton State Hospital in AR, Abilene State Hospital in TX, and Larned State Hospital in KS. Could someone tell me how or where to post some pictures. Thank you.

Welcome Pamela! You can upload photos directly to the site by using the "upload file" link on the left-side menu or if you just want to post them only here on the forum you can use photobucket. Looking forward to seeing them!

Hello and welcome to the web site. Like Squad546 said, there is an upload link to the left in the menus. Also, we have a tutorial that should also be able to answer some of your questions. Plus, there is a help file specifically on how to upload and add images: Help:Images.

I hope those help and look forward to your additions.

need different help now
I uploaded several pictures of the Benton State Hospital in Arkansas. Now I cannot understand how to make them appear on the BSH page. I looked at the help section - but I am still lost about it - or do I need to put the photos somewhere else? Please give me some direction and/or ideas - I am not super computer literate. Thanks.

Well there are a couple different ways to add images:

If you want to add multiple images to a page that has no images that all you need to do is create a gallery like this:

<gallery>
file:image.jpg
file:image2.jpg
file:image3.jpg
</gallery>

Where as all you need to do is add the gallery tags: <gallery></gallery> and then add the entire image name including file between the tags as shown above. So an image name would look like this: file:imagename.jpg

Now, if the article already has a seperate gallery page or a gallery added to the article, then all you need to do is paste the entire name including file: to the already existing gallery.

To see an example of how the coding looks like take a look at this article: Buffalo State Hospital Image Gallery

Also, to edit an article then at the very top of the article is a tab that says edit, click that and you will be presented an edit screen.

We also have some helpful help files that expand and explain how to edit:

AP:TUTOR
Help:Editing

Please feel free to ask more questions if you need help. Trust me, it is not as hard as it looks!

my intro
I just found this site as I was researching the Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, formerly located at Bryn Mawr and Pulaski avenues. What started as curiosity has become a strong interest in learning more about this institution and eventually writing an article about it. As a child, I lived right across the street from the sanitarium, but the view was completely blocked by trees. Today it is a beautiful public park and some of the original buildings remain in use.

When I figure out how to upload photos and post better, I will upload some photographs of the grounds, but in the meantime you can see what material I've already gathered on my blog I did upload one photo successfully but then I couldn't link it to my comment in the forum. Oh, well, I'll get it eventually. thanks for your patience.

Welcome Frances!

If the image is uploaded to the site you can just use the image coding 300px, replace "image" with the name of the image.
