My companion was placed at the Rome NY State School at the age of 6 in 1956 and remained there until he was released at the age of 16. He has savant abilities and remembers a great deal from that time of his life. From what I can ascertain he might be diagnosed today with Asperger's Syndrome. He is very high functiioning, has a great vocabulary, is able to read, drive, owns property, and is a wonderful companion to me. He has told me about many of his experiences at the school. As can be imagined there were abuses and inhumane practices. But I do know that he would go to a reunion at the school years after he was released and also visit a favorite teacher every year that lived in the Rome area. If anyone would like to know more about his experiences, I am willing to write about them.

I would love to hear any stories you might have. I have only seen pictures of the facility but it would be interesting to hear a patients impression of the place. I know former employees at several facilities. One of the best in terms of stories comes from the user BigEd on the opacity forums which can be found here [1] He had many stories from his numerous years of employment at Danvers State Hospital. Both he and his dad worked there for many years and have given some very good information about the place from an employees point of view.

Looking for Info on Rome State School
My father and Uncle were both inmates there at the school in the 60's. I've heard stories of the place how kids were beat up hung from pipes and beat till there whole body was black and blue. My dad and another inmate escaped from there for a whole year before they caught him and brought him back. My uncle was a baby then. Then he got out when he was teenager. I know it's a medium security jail now. I'm planing on taking a trip to see what the place looks like outside. But I want to find my dad and uncle records for them. My dad told me they use to beat him bad in there with fists. They would always put them to work and never really gave them an education. The head lady use to make them come clean her house. Then scrub floors on there hands and knees. He was telling me the attendents would kick there buckets over just for fun and if you didn't clean it up you got beat. He told me a lot of kids died there. You had to eat quick and finish all the food on your tray. If you didn't you got beat. Hope to find out more info.

grandparents
I would be interested in hearing any stories about Rome State School. Apparently, my grandparents both worked there, met there and married. I have no idea what years they worked there, I could only guess it would have been in the 1930's or 1940's. Their surnames were Herb and Martin. If any one recalls them, please contact me at [email protected] Thank you!

My Aunt and Uncle were at Rome State School
My Aunt Edith was sent to Rome State School in 1948, one day after her 15th birthday. She remained there for the next 24 years. She escaped in 1967 at the age of 39. She did not have any disabilities and should never have been there.

She met a man there named Roy and they escaped together. I've been told that he was also an inmate there, but also that he was an employee, possibly driving a laundry truck. After their escape they married and were together until they died. From what I know, they were very happy.

I have two photos of my Aunt's room which I'll try to upload. She is not in the photos, the people are other relatives who were visiting her. I was quite surprised how nice the room was. I have some photos of her outside and you can see some buildings, so I'll try to upload them as well. Some of the photos have other girls with her, but I don't know who they are.

If anyone has updated information on how to obtain records, please let me know. I've tried in the past but nothing has worked.
