My mom and dad both were sent away to this dreaded place in the 1940's There wasn't anything wrong with either one of them. Their crime? Being deaf and parents not being able to deal with it. Sure to this unfortunate situation my parents both were robbed and so weren't my siblings andI. We have survived beatings, verbal abuse, and some other abnormalities. As a child I blamed my mother for her psychotic behavior it wasn't until adulthood and therapy that I could understand why my mother wasn't normal and it's because HER childhood was robbed as well and she didn't know any better. How come there were no civil law suits ever filled. Would love to hear if any other folks had a very dysfunctional upbringing. Not to mention I feel my parents were robbed of education as well. It shows in their speech and their writing.

My great uncle Fred Keller d.o.b July 3,1897 went to Rome sometime between the 1910 census and the draft in 1917. He is listed on his draft card already living at Rome and listed as a moron. Cannot find any other information about him and where he would have went when the asylum turned into a school......

My great Uncle was sent there sometime between 1910 when he was in the census with his family and 1917 on his draft card. He was listed at Rome state custodial asylum. Havent seen his name on the cemetery list . If he remained there where would he have gone when it turned into a school or when it closed? And where would reecords of this be?

Hello, I've combined your two separate posts into one for consistency's sake and also per our forum rules.

While I'm not much of a genealogist and there maybe someone who could point you better, I know I can answer a few things. The "into school" thing was mainly the institution changing names but not purposes. So he most likely was still there when the name changed.

My other guess would be that he could have spent the rest of his life there. The reason he might have not shown on the Rome State School cemetery list could be that either, he left the institution for an adult home and passed away there or he passed away at the institution and his/your family claimed his body for burial at their own preferred cemetery.

While we have no institution records ourselves, I believe the Rome Historical Society [1] has more genealogical information on the institution.

My sister
She was placed in this school for about 10 years during the 1950's. Supposedly because she was
mentally challenged. When she left, at age 18, the family doctor discovered she was profoundly deaf! She never wanted to talk about it except to say she missed everyone and cried a lot. When she couldn't stop crying she was wrapped in wet sheets for long periods of time.

I would like to find out what other forms of "treatment" were used.

I'd appreciate any comments. Thank you.

looking for information on my relative
I just recently found out that my great aunt was at Rome State School before it shut down. I don't know exactly when she was there, but her name was either Helen Smith or Helen Rogers. I was told recent stories about the abuse she endured there like all her hair being pulled out. I am working on my ancestry and would love to find out more information about her and her time there. I believe she was born after 1928, but not 100% sure. Her mother's name was Evelyn (Armstrong) Rogers or Smith (depending on who she was married to at the time of helen's birth).

A Resident of mine lived there for 20 yrs and now is 69. He was treated in humanly. He told me they use to flush the toilets with there heads in there. A worker also broke a broomstick over his head. Put a hole in the bathroom wall with his head. Terrible stories
