Getting Records - if your living
I don't know where Byberry is, but I live in NYS and I got all my records from BSH (buffalo state) progress notes and all the other crazy stuff they had to say about me. I went through a non profit mental health advocacy place that has lawyers for mental patients signed some forms they sent the records to the lawyer who in turn gave them to me. The legal service was free, non-profit. So I don't know if that might help you get your records. If your still receiving any services from them I don't know if you could do it, but finding a client advocacy place might be the place to start. I think I would look for the county mental health association where you live they are non-profits and may offer legal services. Good luck.

My grandfather was in Byberry and I am looking for information on him and I am having difficulty locating what happened to him after 1940. I can't even locate a death record.

Curious about the By-Line
I'm writing a book about Byberry and am currently collecting stories and photographs to include. If you're interested in sharing please email me at [email protected] Not enough people know about/remember Byberry, so this is a great opportunity to help keep the memories--good or bad--alive. You'll get full credit in the book!

On a side note, does anyone know who uploaded/has the rights to the By-Line newsletter? I'd love to include it in the book and give appropriate credit where due!

Interested in Images
Do you have any photographs of either of those relatives? I'm writing a pictorial history book for Arcadia Publishing about Byberry and would be interested in including both your relatives' photographs and their story. You'd be given full credit in the published book!

PS: For all those who own pictures of Byberry, worked at Byberry, or had a relative who was a patient at Byberry, please contact me at [email protected] I'd love to include all of your interesting stories and photographs! (My deadline is November 2012, so please get back to me before then.)

I have never met any former patients of Byberry.

I had two relatives who were in Byberry. One was shellshocked in WWI and developed schizophrenia. The other believed he was Rhett Butler from Gone With the Wind and the book was written about him.

I cannot remember which but one of them was in Byberry when the family moved. They left a forwarding address and told the people who bought their house that if he escaped or were released he would probably come there and to give him their address. One day he showed up but when he did not recognize the new owners when they answered the door he ran off. We don't know what happened to him.

Thank you, I'm so excited to include the newsletter in the book! If you don't mind me asking, how did you acquire the newsletter? Did you find it at Byberry itself, when it was still explorable? Just curious :]

If you don't mind, could you please send me an email stating that you grant permission to [email protected], when you get a chance? My publisher is really strict about the legal issues. I'll make sure to credit the images as "Courtesy of AsylumProjects.org"

Thank you again!

The records are in Harrisburg at the state archives. http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/sd/r23phisd.htm here's a list of what they have if anyone is interested...
