The San Antonio card is nice. It looks like that hospital could be more Transitional than Cottage.

The time period would be about right. Wish we had some sanborn maps or something of this hospital.

Hmm, very odd. I would certainly not call that a cottage.

Damn squad, where do you find all these Sanborns?

I think it's listed as a cottage plan because we had very little to go on several years ago. It's safe to say it's due for an update.

As for the Sanborns, I had a contact at a university that let me use a password for a week. I managed to download over 250 maps, I might've missed a few places though. Unfortunately more then a few, like Danvers, weren't mapped for whatever reason. They're in pdf format, so they loose alot of detail when I convert them to be posted here. If you want a higher resolution of something, let me know and I can email it.

  • EDIT
Here's the only other map for San Antonio, pretty plain compared to the 1924 version. There wasn't even much to crop out. Although you can see how it had been added onto at some point.

Thats pretty awesome you got so many. I got access to a database from a friend a Temple and downloaded some but like you said, so many I looked for I could not find.

What is the year from that earlier one?

Here is the timeline of it according to the one book.

1892: Opened with 200 patient cap.
1898:Addition for 300 more
1910: Addition for 300 more and two 25 patient TB buildings
1911: Addition for 100 cap acute building.

The earlier Sanborn is from 1904.

Cool. So I guess it started as the admin with the one ward block on each side, then the 1898 addition to give it the U shape we see in that 1904 Sanborn. And the next addition must have been elongating the addition.

Agreed, looks like they added on the easy way. Too bad there aren't any maps from later years though.

To make this discussion easier to find and also so we don't "clutter" the postcard thread I moved this discussion to its own thread.

Good call.

Maybe we should have a thread to pose questions about hospitals and such as they come up so we arent doing it on other threads.

Anyways, what are we thinking all thinking here, Transitional Plan?

I would think at least a transitional plan, but leaning towards the cottage plan. It was established roughly around the time that the cottage plan was evolving.

My grandmother Ida Stork Hoffmann died in this hospital July 1916 - have written to the TX Dept of State Health Svcs - they won't release records even tho I am her only descendant. Only executors have access and there was no executor. Need the info for genealogical purposes.

If you have proof you are the only decedent or nearest direct one I would say try presenting that proof to them. Also, I find contacting your state representative about any problem you might have can be very helpful in getting results.

Some states have a process where you can file with the court to get the permission needed to obtain such records. I'm not familiar with the process for Texas, but you could always try calling the hospital, might get some help with them. I looked her name up but unfortunately Texas doesn't have Death Certificates available anywhere online, even on Ancestry.com. All I found was a record of a Ida Hoffman that died July 26th, 1916 in Bexar County (San Antonio). I believe you can order a copy of it from the state though.
