Good morning!

I was wondering if Clifton State Hospital in Clifton Virginia is still standing or if it was completely destored? Also is there any more abandoned hospitals in Virginia? And how difficult is it to purphase one of these beautiful structures? I'd love to invest in saving them and I can't find any preservation groups around Virginia that save them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

It's not often i say this but I am having no luck on locating information on the fate of this facility. As to sites to explore, I try not to give out direct information about sites and how to get into them, as a general rule we are not an Urban exploration site and few members probably would even if it were. No offense to you, but anyone can post saying they want to look or preserve sites while having the intention of destroying or exploiting them. I would highly suggest checking out the Virginia preservation society at www.preservationvirginia.org, the Central Virginia/Peidmont area preservation alliance http://preservecva.wordpress.com/, or the Virginia preservation alliance at www.vapreservation.org. There are literally dozens of sites that might be able to help you, but I am not from the area and have little in the way of contacts or resources there.

Thank you for the information. And I understand you can't trust anyone that says they would like to save historic structures such as asylums. But I do have the utmost respect for people who preserve and I do long to purchase one only with the intentions of showing people they're not harmful or demeaning. Either way, I love your website and I think you should be praised for all you do to inform people of these beautiful historic buildings. I'm definitely going to look into those preservation groups today! Thank you so very much!

I myself love to explore and wear several hats, unfortunately we just can't be sure, I will keep digging for information on the hospital though.

Here is the most I have been able to find on the hospital so far. It would seem the entire city was added to the national historic registry in 1985. The designation doesn't mean that the hospital would not be taken down, but it would usually require a paper trail that I could find so I am going to guess the facility is still standing in some shape or form. The national historic registry has rules on the type and extent of changes that can be made to a place on the registry, so my guess is the facade would still remain the same but the changes to the inside could be significant.

Pictures of the historic city buildings can be found here. http://historicclifton.org I can't preview them at work as our web searches are filtered, but I hope it helps.
