So going through my collection of old asylum photos, I came across this one unlabeled and not in a folder and I can't figure out which hospital it is.

If I had to guess, maybe Greystone? But that's just a guess. I can se if I can find a match at home though.

At first I thought it was Clarinda, but the wards don't look the same. I'm not sure. But it sure is one cool image.

yeah the more I look at it the more I think Greystones top floor looks different, it's the main entrances cupola that got me thinking Greystone

It's not Greystone. The admin is way more ornate and grandiose.

Damn! Beat me to it! I was just doing some research on this hospital on Monday so as soon as I saw that pic I knew it was Rochester. Guess I just can't leave this site for even a minute!

While we are on the topic of this hospital perhaps we should open up for dicussion one of the obvious things that stand out with this kirk (and this was also the reason for my research). In the photo posted by PD, you can see the wings of the kirk but the admin and the wings directly connected to it are far different than what you see in all the other postcards and images that are out there. So what happened? It's unheard of for a kirk to become more ornate as time goes on. Perhaps a fire burned the admin? The hospital its self had odd beginnings, as it was intended to be a state inebriate asylum but it changed purposes to a mental hospital after the building was already half built. There is no mention of the original plans for this hospital to be a kirkbride in the 1916 book that I use for most of my referencing.

Maybe PD can pull another rabbit out of that magic hat where she keeps all these photos and provide us with a ground map?

After staring at the picture PD posted some more and referencing the wiki entry all I can think is that maybe because of the pressure to get the hospital open, perhaps they continued to finish the admin with the inebriate asylum plans and then redesigned the outter wings in kirkbride fashion. Then at some point after that photo was taken the admin and two center wings were demolished and they finished off the kirkbride.

I always thought it looked like one of the smaller Kirkbride annex buildings at Elgin, IL then a full-sized one.

I don't know if PD has anything better, but here are the 3 Sanborn maps I have for Rochester. Looks fairly unchanged from 1904-1928.

Well, this is very very interesting. I wrote off Rochester cause of how different the admin was. I do find it very peculiar that they changed the admin COMPLETELY. I mean you can clearly see the entire admin was redone and not just additives. I would have to say either a fire happened, or something similar to Harrisburg and it was built poorly and needed to be redone.

According to http://reflections.mndigital.org/ the image I posted was taken around 1890 - 1899. Now to figure out when the other one was taken to give us a time frame to look at.

If those sanborn maps start at 1904 and PD's image is from the 1890s then the change had to of taken place in between them. I don't think there is any way this change would have happened after 1928. By the 1930s hospitals are way to focused on money to make such ornate changes to the building.

I just can't believe that the 1916 report doesn't have anything about this.

Between 1904 & 1914 it looks like the tower on the admin was changed. Looks like partly for fire protection.
