Soldat, I just sent you a list of FAQs I got from the Arcadia rep I have been talking to. The hardest part of this really is getting the numbers of images together and creating a text for each. Since we all own these postcard we should not have to worry about copyrights for the images should this project move forward.

Fantastic idea for a book; I wonder though whether copyright would be an issue.

Of the two self-publishing outfits I've used, I've had good success with Lulu, but didn't care much for Createspace's proofing process.

I favor self publishing because there is little to no overhead cost. Full color printing is expensive to produce, which tends to discourage sales; and so, in the interest of producing an affordable work, dramatically reduces royalties. But e-publishing is also a decision worth exploring, I think, and certainly something I will be considering in the near future.

Let me know if or how I can help as well.

Thanks a ton guys. I have been wanting to make a book like this for awhile and really don't know where to start. But I guess I will see where it goes.

Also, here are three new ones I recently got scanned of three of my favorite places.

As I sort of knew, Arcadia does regional/local area books only, so they are out for a postcards of state hospitals book. I suppose self publishing it is?

Anyway, I got three new cards, including a trifold of Polk.

Please let me know how your expierence with Arcadia goes. I've been toying with the idea of doing a book either on Weston State Hospital or, kind of like you, a "West Virginia Asylums" book. Both of which would also be composed of post cards and historical photos.

I talked to Arcadia and they won't do a general asylum postcard book. State wide books would be as wide as you could get it, like you are doing.

I have really just been busy with work and too lazy to find a publisher who would be interested in a book of asylum cards spanning the country.

I know Arcadia does have a series where it is just postcards. Perhaps it could be done state by state?

Anyway, here are some new ones of mine.

Morris Publishing could be a good one to check with. They do only short-run printings, 100-5,000, & the books are a maximum of 100 pages. Another option to try is blurb.com, I know a guy that has had several books printed with them, basically self-published. When I get a chance I'll get more details from him about it. These days with digital printing presses, self-publishing seems to be a good way to go.

Howdy, I'm back.

Does it seem like everyone here is contemplating or working on one of those postcard/image books? Heck, the last couple people asking permission to use images from AP are working on an Arcadia book.

Great looking postcards Soldat.
