So why are they tearing it down again? its a danger to the road in to the hospital or something? How hard would it be to just build a road further away? Im sure cheaper too.

I think the official reason is they're worrid about "airborne asbestos" particles drifting over to the new place.

That possible replica drawing is ugly. It reminds me of an old chapel you'd see in a cemetery.

I guess on the bright side from 5 miles away one probably couldn't tell any difference!

The asbestos thing is a lame excuse considering it would have to be abated whether it was going to be rehabbed or demolished, but I think we all know that. As for the drawing of the tower, yeesh. Probably would've been better off having some sort of design competition and incorporate that into a memorial of sorts. I would've liked to see the preservation group put up more of a fight, seems like they gave in fairly early.

I'll agree with most of the comments here, Danvers wasn't a total failure. As Porcelain said, they did preserve a portion of the Kirkbride, remember Avalon wanted to demolish the entire thing. I would say Iowa would take the award for preservation so far, since they still use their Kirkbrides. We have to remember there are more then a few still in use that probably wont go anywhere soon. I know that Hopkinsville (KY) & Kankakee (IL) have no plans for closure. There are probably about 20 more around the country still standing.

PD you make some really good points. The sad fact is that we as "Kirkbride Fans" are just going to have to learn to live with very low expectations. The design, layout, and floor plan of Kirkbrides is extremely outdated and pretty much useless in the present day.

As you mentioned the situation at Travers City is probably the best. There are also some hospitals that I'd classify as "works in progress" like Buffalo, Weston, Fergus Falls, and St. Elizabeths where it will be very interesting to see how the final product turns out. Other than that we'll just have to deal with the high mortality rate of original Kirkbrides and keep them alive with photos, old post cards, and internet sites like this one.

Weston is the best hospital saved as it's original self, it's the ESP of the asylum world. But thankfully other states that are not Massachusetts are aware of how precious these places are, and trying to help preserve them.

This article is a little late http://articles.boston.com/2012-02-25/letters/31094391_1_clock-tower-high-ceilings-factory...

I'm rather annoyed at how quickly it seems the preservation Worcester group jumped onto the "monument" wagon. Until the first brick is knocked out of the admin they should still be trying to save it (IMO).

I absolutely love to look at the Facebook photos that are being posted of the restored Buffalo kirk. If I were someone in an administration position at Worcester I would much rather have my office in the classic interior of a kirk admin than in that ugly monstrosity that they have built.

Agreed, they said they were going to fight to the end but seemed to have caved pretty quick! There is more then enough support for them to keep going until the actual demolition.
