Lgoansport state hospital is, as far as I can tell, still an active mental health facility located in Logansport, IN .

Logansport State Hospital
1098 South State Road 25
Logansport, IN 46947-9699
(574) 737–3633
www.lshonline.org

I would start by contacting the facility itself to see if they have an office or person in their medical records division that can help you. Logansport is located in Cass County Indiana so if the hosptial can't help you I'd look at the Cass county historical society (1004 E. Market St. Logansport, Ind., 46947 574-753-3866 online at www.casshistory.com) or the Cass County Health Dept. (512 High Street Logansport, IN (574) 753-7760). IF all of these fail, there is also the Cass County Mental Health Assoc. (421 12th Street Logansport, IN (574) 722-3984).

Best of Luck

I haven't talked to anyone there in over a year, but they said they do what they can to help relatives with old records. I know older records were handed over to the state when the building that held most of the old stuff was demolished, but 1959 records they may still have. The librarian/archivist, Brian Newell still works there & would probably be you're best contact person there. His number is (574)722-4141 ext-3712.

Womans /Girls Unit - giving birth at Logansport State Hospital
I am trying to research how pregnant Patients, specifically were handled and if they are recoreded, were they sent to other hospitals, delivered at Logansport State Hospital and did anyone record or research the process. I am interested in all specifics; and timelines in the event it changed through the course of time. How many births, ages of mother and years the births took place to determine if specific years play into demographics. Live Births, Still Births, Adoptions vs. Relative Placement.

in example the role the moral mindset of the time was it more prevelent in the 1960's vs.. previous 30's, 40's or 50's etc..

How many baby's born each year, age of mother at time of Birth and how many - if you have any specifics you can contact me at (317) 702-1038 PL Armstrong - Research Coordinator or by e-mail at [email protected]

They would record in the admission paperwork if a patient was pregnant or if she had a newborn with her. I didn't see any mention of these patients or their children in the annual reports I've read. I'll look through the paperwork I have and email you what I find and contact info for someone at the hospital.

Mother patient there when pregnant with me
I was born 1/7/67 at Logansport Memorial Hospital. I was adpoted at birth. However the story goes like this... I was the 8th child, a girl (4 girls/4boys) and mother was supposedly at State Hospital but had birth at Memorial. Not sure of timeline of her admittance. I was told the last name was Willoughby. Broken family, divorce/alchohol drama and mental issues with mother. I was so blessed to be taken home to foster parents who ended up adopting me. Because I had such great parents I have never really given a hard effort to find my birth parents. If anythign I am more interested in the story and would be curious to know what became of the other kids. I have been told the oldest girl went on her own and the rest went to Catholic orphanage in Fort Wayne.

I am wondering if the name Williughby is correct or if that is the wrong track. Any of this soun d familiar ? How should I proceed ?

All I can suggest is to start with the hospital and asking them. Have you obtained your birth certificate from the county? That would be another good place to start.

Birth Certificate
Your birth certificate should be on file at the county health department. The vital records department can be reached at (574)753-7760.

Good luck!
