Found these recent photos of the demolition of 4 Norwich buildings from Thursday at theday.com. Seems the city gave the green light the other day and they didn't waste anytime.
Demo photos

Well that sucks. Though that's not unexpected. I knew that they were having a hard time trying to find anyone interested in buying the property. Plus, those buildings were not getting any better with age.
However, I'm saddened to see them go. That was the hospital that got me interested in asylums in the first place.
Quick story:
When I was in the navy, I was stationed over at Sub base New London in Groton CT. First as a brand new sailor in need of training and second on the submarine USS Pittsburgh.
While I was in one of my training schools on that base, I developed kidney stones. The base hospital/clinic didn't have the technology to deal with them so they sent me to Bachus Hospital in Norwich.
There was two routes to and from Backus hospital, the quick route and the slow route. One day, I was heading back to base after an appointment at the hospital. I decided to be the typical lazy sailor and take my time driving back to base. I had heard that route 12 ran all the from Norwich to my base in Groton. So I followed that winding road until it went up a hill, around a turn, and back down. As I crested the top of that hill, I saw around me all sorts of mysterious abandoned brick buildings in a large complex. I had never seen so many abandoned buildings! It looked like a college campus! Turns out, after some quick research it was Norwich State Hospital.
From there it was all down hill. My interest in trying to find out what that campus was led me to discover other state hospitals and from there it was all down hill.
Norwich was the first state hospital I became interested in and I'm saddened to see them tear down the buildings.

| Wow such a shame. This was always cool place to visit. Hard to believe that New England had so many asylums to explore and now we have next to nothing.

According to the Mayor the building were being vandalized, so to protect the buildings from vandals he decided to tear them down. Good logic.
I hope he dies of cancer.

Tell me about it! One of my biggest regrets was never getting up that way to meet with you for out planned Danvers/Northampton/Met State weekend! I never thought they'd all be gone so fast.

| That's hard to look at. Are they demoing the whole place? I thought I heard a while back that the admin and some patient buildings were being saved? I hope that nice auditorium is saved too.

NOPE.
"The Urban Act money will demolish the Salmon and Awl buildings, the chapel and the theater."

It's ridiculous, and the only reason why they are doing the beautiful buildings is because everyone comes to visit those. So once they are eliminated, whose gonna go visit? Fuckers, they still haven't finished the buildings they were supposed to tear down last year. Spiteful assholes.

Yeah that would of been nice to meet up and hang around. That was ages ago but I somewhat remember those tentative plans.
