Dixmont State Hospital, Images of America Book by Mark Benton

I just wanted to post that I FINALLY bought this book last week. I wanted to do a quick review of it, especially because of how impressed I was.

I own about 10 books in the Images of America series by Arcadia Publishing. This is one of the better ones I've come across. It was very very thorough; from preconstruction to demolition this book covers it all. The scope and quality of the photographs was superb.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest if Dixmont or Kirkbride asylums in general. If you're lucky enough to have The Dixmont State Hospital: A Historical Documentary DVD, the book makes an excellent companion.

Link to more info. on the DVD (not sure if it is still available)

Thanks for the tip, I've seen it for sale for a while and wondered if it was as good as the rest of the Arcadia books.

As far as Arcadia Kirkbride books go I believe there is only Dixmont, Traverse City, and Spring Grove.

I have the Traverse City book, and it too is great. Spring Grove is on my Amazon Wish List, has anyone seen it?

They did a book on Eloise (MI), that's the only other one I know of.

I have Spring Grove as well as Dixmont and a bunch of other non state hospital Arcadia books. It's been probably more than a year since I read through the Spring Grove book, but I remember it having quite a few photos of the kirk that I had never seen before.
