Appreciate your efforts and information. I've seen the 1880 census of Turin, NY and discovered the 1890 Illinois census schedules were destroyed by fire. I wrote requesting information from the Kendall County Clerk at Yorkville in April, but never received a reply. It does seem I keep hitting brick walls. About the time I discovered your website I ran across a site that had an Illinois State Archives Statewide Death Index. Charles S. Dewey's death at Elgin Insane Hospital was listed, and they gave a Certifica No. 10962. Perhaps I should find the address for the Archieves and write to them. I was encouraged, when I saw an 1880 census of patients at Elgin on the internet, that I might yet be able to get my great-grandfather's records. This may be a futile effort, but I'm not reeady to give up yet. Again, thank you for your help. I will write to the e-mail address you've provided. Your site is wonderful. The only way to obtain these records is through a court order which, they noted, was quite difficult and expensive. The representative did, however, suggest that I contact the Illinois State Archives for a death certificate, which I did. I rec'd the certificate in the mail. The information on the certificate is minimal, which may be standard in such cases, but atleast I learned the cause of his death. Just wanted to let you know for future reference regarding inquiries on Northern Hospital & Asylum at Elgin, IL. Thank you.

Dennis Fitzpatrick - Polk State Home for Feeble-Minded
My great-uncle Dennis Fitzpatrick was born in 1908 (I believe) in Pittsburgh, PA. He was living with his family in Pittsburg in 1920 per the 1920 Federal Census. By the 1930 Federal Census he was living at the Polk State Home for Feeble-Minded (age 20). I am unsure of his date of admission to the Home. I have no date of his passing but he was still living in 1940 at age 30. I would appreciate any information on my great uncle or how I could that information. PA is an odd state for acquiring records. The link above is to the access listing for birth and death certificates. You can access and order death certificates for persons deceased from 1906-1961. In searching the social security death index I am not finding a record for a Dennis Fitzpatrick, but records for the SSDI don't really start until about 1965ish. If he died prior to this time than his name may not be listed on the ssdi. The Pennsylvania state archives is really very selective in explaining what records it does and doesn't have. If a death certificate search doesn't work than I would try contacting them. You can contact their archivist here [email protected]

I found several Dennis Fitzpatricks from PA born around 1908, including the census records you already found. 1 is from Cambria, but it has him enlisting in the Army for WW2, probably not him. Another on the SSDI was born in 1909 and died in Warren,Ohio in 1987. Says his SSN was issued in Pennsylvania in 1973. It's possible that could be him as they may have issued him a # upon being released from Polk State School. Another thing is that the "Industry of decedent" is listed as "Homemaker, student, unemployed volunteer". There is another but no information other then date of birth & death.

I have found that my grandfather died in 1967 after a lengthy illness at Gallipolis State Hospital in Ohio. I don't have much information on him, and would love any information I can get.

My mother was sent there at 16 years old by her father who did not want to care for her. She was normal. She spent 6 years there before a staff member helped her escape year 1936 where she spent the rest of her life living a normal life. On her death bed she told me her story. I have been trying to obtain her 6 year records (which I saw her name on a folder), but "they" would not allow me to see them. Instead they advise me they were (1)destroyed, (2)not there. Is there anyone out there that can help me. I gave up on attornies (all they want is there money and no record. I would be willing to pay for a complete record file. My grandfather Ole Borgen (born in Norway 31th July 1899)was an inmate at Cherokee State Hospital in 1940. He came to Winnebago,Iowa in 1923. He left his family in Norway and never looked back.He died in Lake Mills in 1973. Is it possible to get information about why he was in the hospital for insane and for how long he stayed at Cherokee State Hospital? [email protected]

Looking for records of James Welch, Winnebago Asylum, Oshkosh, WI
James Welch died in Oshkosh, WI March 9th, 1927 and was in the Winnebago Asylum until he died. His obituary was in the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern Newspaper.I don't know what he died of or how long he was at Winnebago. He was born in Sauk County, WI in 1875 and married Catherine Dwyer. Any information would be appreciated.

This would have been my GG Paternal Grandmother. We have come up with Geneological records from Iroquois County with her husband having declared her insane, as well as the court, and Dr. too,.. they sent her to Illinois Central State hospital for the Insane. This all happened in Jan 1879. She dies less than 2 months later.We have her grave site as being at Immanuel SOuth Cemetary. Which is part of an unclaimed patient cemetary from that particular Mental institution. We are wanting to know where to go to for any sort of Death certificate/ medical information for family medical history. PLease help.....[email protected]

I am searching for information about my paternal grandfathers sister.I believe she may have been a patient at the Bangor State Hospital in the 1930's.Family lore is that she died in the " insane asylum" Her name was Mary Russell. She was born in Penobscot,Maine in 1899.
