To me this is a huge shock and injustice on multiple levels. First, in my opinion Fergus Falls was one of the better if not best preserved Kirkbrides. Second, over 200 people showed up for the city council meeting to show their support for a reuse plan!

I agree. Compared to other Kirkbrides, Fergus Falls doesn't look like it needs as much rehab as other Kirk's. That it is less deteriorated then other Kriks. Plus, there is a lot of potential for reuse and even money making. However, I get the sense that some if not all of the council is looking for ways to use the demolition money for other uses. So they want to get rid of as much as they can as cheaply as they can.

I think that comment from the man named Johnson sums it up: the council doesn't care as long as they don't have to spend any of their own money on it. I have a sneaking suspicion certain political movements may be having a hand in what's going on there. It just seems as if they are trying to play the reallocate money game.

Yeah this all boils down to money/red tape/politics.

Well it's that and that they just don't care about it. I got some friends up in that area and I guess the general feeling outside of the preservation community is just plain apathy about the building.

This just drives me so insane, the building is in so much better shape then others that have been restored and they are just in a rush to demo the building. >.<

This saddens me to no end. I really wish my mother and I could get up to Minnesota (we have family there) and see the hospital before it is gone. As I had posted on Kirkbride Buildings, how is it that Europe, through all of the destruction that they faced through two world wars can maintain their architecture from the 13th-14th centuries, but we can hardly keep the beautiful and ornate architecture from the 1800s? They're too busy constructing buildings that all look the same, I suppose...what a shame.

Not sure how many saw this, but Ethan over at Kirkbride Buildings posted this site that Colliers International set-up as a way to find a developer for the building. Let's hope it leads to something! Maybe add it to the preservation alert?
