My name is Deborah Weary and I have recently begun to do some reasearch about my family and I have come to find otu that my grandmother was a patient/resident of the Hamburg sanitorium in the late 1930's/ early 1940's and would like to find out if you have any information on her. Her name was Alice Weary(maiden name Carl) At this time that is all the information I have

I am looking for any information on my paternal grandfather he was said to be a resident of the Berks County Almshouse hospital

Alice,

Which Hamburg are you talking about? Do you mean the one in Penn? If that is the case, Hamburg Sanatorium in Hamburg PA was a TB sanatorium. There are two Alice Weary's that show up in toe social security death index, one is from Carlisle, PA (born Feb 9, 1915 deceased April 23, 2001). That would fit with Hamburg TB sanatorium.

It would also make sense as Hamburg is in Berks County and your grandparents may actually have met at the TB sanatorium. The almshouse itself is gone, though several paintings of it exist and are considered collectible. I do not know for sure but many times there was cross over between places like tb sanatoriums and almshouses. it's also possible he was transferred away from the alms house if he was thought to have tb.

It was definitley the Hamburg, PA TB sanatorium I have paperwork that states that on March 31, 1940 my Grandmother was 43 so that would give her a birth date of 1897. As of that date my Grandfather was said to be in the county almshouse hospital I believe his birth year was 1901.

The only Alice with either last name I could find didn't seem to have birth dates close to 1897, but if she died before 1962 the Social Security Death Index may not have a record of her. Hamburg is actually still open, though no longer a TB center. Contact Hamburg Center Facility Director's Office: (610) 562-6001 John W. Graham - you might try calling to see what you would need to do to get records, though I fear they may not exist at this point. The Berks County historical society maybe able to help too (940 Centre Avenue Reading, PA 19601(610) 375-4375). Berks Co has a great genealogical society as well.
