If you have historical or vintage photos of state hospitals, share them with the community here. (Please note this is only is you physically own the image, and not something you found out on the internet)

Here's 3 I got from the Kankakee Historical Society of Manteno. For those that want old asylum photos, there's ton to be had, but usually are buried in archives. I've found some good photos in state archives in boxes marked "miscellaneous", just a tip.

Dedication ceremony in 1928 with Gov. Len Small. This set of stairs was the back of the admin and after the building was rehabbed after the hospital closed, the stone was moved around front. Last time I stopped there, it's a bank now, the people working there had no idea what it used to be! They thought Manteno had always been a VA hospital.

Photo of the 2-story cottages going up, also 1928.

Here's some from the Kentucky Dept. for Libraries & Archives. They have plenty of old photos, but I'm only allowed 3 per visit.

The admin of the Kirkbride at Central State in Louisville

A closer view of the Kirkbride just to the right of the admin with a nice 1951ish Buick!

These 2 came from the Louisville Courier-Journal & Louisville Times circa 1960s. They ran a story about Electroconvulsive therapy & went to Eastern State Hospital in Lexington instead of Central State in Louisville, no idea why. Anyway I sent an email asking for photos of the old CSH & they sent me these 2, along with a bill for $25 of course. I think this story was in response to the book by Ken Kesey 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' & it's portrayal of ECT.

lol, that's pretty funny, they just randomly send you a bill without mentioning payment before hand?

That's cool that you get these photos just by visiting the hospital (for the most part), especially the Central State Kirkbride. I wish that building was still around. Most of the photographs that I have seen in person were at the PA State Archives, and once they are at a state archive they are not going anywhere.

Here are a few of mine from Harrisburg State Hospital. Sorry for the watermark. I scanned these a year ago for my blog and I don't really feel like doing them again to remove it.

I talked to someone on the phone that said "Oh yeah, we have some great old photos of the hospital, I'll send you 2 of the best in the file." That's what I ended up with, they blamed it on an intern or something. This spring I'm going to head over there in person to look. Great photos guys! Tried local papers? I've noticed the towns that hospitals are in, especially smaller town papers, sometimes have a lot of old photos. Their days are numbered, since many papers are dumping their photos after they digitize them.

Here's a few of Eastern State (KY), the guy that runs the library has some but doesn't have time to scan what he's got, might have to volunteer to help with that.

1950s of the Admin building, pretty much unchanged today except for the trees are gone.
EasternState1a.jpg

Aerial view from 1955, also pretty much the same except the farm at the top is just a field now. The smoke stack is gone as well. I was told there should be several more views, but they couldn't find them.

I found this on eBay a few years ago. It is mounted on a 8x10 and judging from the cupolas on the ends it is a pretty early photo.

These are both framed and hanging in my home office.

This first one is a nice black and white that is 8x10"

And this one is really cool. It is faded and I had trouble getting a good photo, but it is a very nice hand colored photo of the admin. I just really wish I could get a better photo of it. It is probably 12x12"

A while ago I bought on Ebay an architects photo book of the laundry building that was completed on Kalamazoo State Hospital's campus back in July 1948.

That's pretty cool, and with lots of good pics. Wish there were more books like that out there.

Agreed, nice K'zoo find! Unfortunately it's things like that they throw out without thinking.

Got this photo from the Kankakee Historical Museum. All it said on the back was "Kankakee Asylum", no date. Most likely a room in the Kirkbride, but not sure why there's so many staff for what looks like an ankle injury!
004.jpg

Also this one of the fire brigade in front of the Kirkbride. Most likely 1890s-1900.
