| I have recently found out that my Grandfather, Harry J. Youmans, was listed as an "Inmate" at the St. Lawrence State Hospital in Ogdensburg, New York, in the 1930 Census. I never knew him or my Grandmother on my Father's side and family history details were almost non-existent since my Father, Robert W. Youmans, was an only child who was "orphaned" (?) at around age 9 and raised by other family members. I am searching for any history of my Grandfather's illness, reason for incarceration and/or date and place of death and burial. I am stymied as to whom to contact or how to get this information.

The link here has a great history of the facility you are asking about, but I need a little more information in order to narrow down your grandfather, do you know when or where he was born or the year in which he died?
Largely the information we can give you is going to be general information because the records from the facility are probably sealed.

| St Lawrence County Historical Association has some of the old records from the asylum. Try contacting them and see if they can help or who to contact for info. Historical Society website

St. Lawrence Burial records
|
| You can write to St. Lawrence and they will tell you where your loved one is buried, if they were buried on asylum property. They will not give you medical records. Also, write to your state senator and tell him/her to support this bill: http://inmatesofwillard.com/2012/03/27/s6805-2011-ny-senate-open-legislation-relates-to-pa...
