My 2nd grt Uncle (Fritz Treutlein) was placed in the Milwaukee Insane Asylum in about 1900 and lived there until his death in 1952. I would like some information about why he was there...It appears that he was dropped off at a young age and no one ever went back again. The main reason I would like information is there seems to be a number of family members on both my paternal and maternal sides of mental health issues. I think this information could be important to me and my children. Where might I obtain information regarding his stay?
Sincerely,
Michelle

| I would start by contacting the Milwaukee Co. Historical society 414-273-7487. Someone there should know where the records would have ended up and what steps you will need to take to acquire any records that might exist. The hospital itself is gone, replaced by the Froedtert Health Center, the only standing part of the old asylum is the old administration building that is part of the Parks department. My guess is any records were handed over to the Wisconsin State Archives or the Wisconsin department of Mental Health services. Many of the records were stored at the Mendota facility (Mendota Mental Health Institute 301 Troy Drive, Madison, WI 53704 Phone: (608) 301-1000 Fax: (608) 301-1358). Once you find where the records are you could also have your own dr request the records due to the ongoing health issue. This may help eliminate some of the medical records issues.
