I have been trying to locate the Patient Records for the Syracuse School for Feeble Minded Children. Recently I have found Census Records that show I had a Great Aunt that spent some time at that School. I can trace her there through the 1930 Census after that I am not sure where she went or what happened to her.

Syracuse State School became the Syracuse Developmental Center and closed in 1998. My best guess is you would need to contact the New York Department of Mental Health and Hygeine.

The Patient Records are located at the New York State Office of Developmental Disabilities in Rome, NY---unfortunately for all of us who want to see these records. We cannot get access to them because of the federal HIPAA laws. The only one who can access a patient's record is their Guardian or Caregiver. I have been advised by a very nice lady at that office, who was very apologetic about not being able to assist me is to have everyone contact their local State Representatives to please agree to look at the proposal next time the NYSODD presents the request to amend this law to allow for Geneology research by families.

Patients Records in New York State
There is a bill that was introduced into the NYS Legislature that is before the finance committee that would release the names of former patients incarcerated in New York State institutions.
