Makes you wonder how many other state hospitals might have bodies buried randomly around the campus. I can't imagine having to watch part of HSH be torn down, so I feel for ya.
Are they planning on building a whole new hospital the way Greystone and Worcester did? Or are they just consolidating into less existing buildings?

I usually assume that at old state hospitals there are bodies buried everywhere!
I know to that it was common practive to bury old medical equipment/waste and old patient files on hospital grounds too. There is an account from Byeberry where they sealed up a ton of of records in a tunnel section that was no longer used.

Remind me, did they demo all the tunnels when they demo'd Byberry?

I recall they demoed all the ones on property but the sections under the roads I think are still there.
Who even knows with the shady shit the contractor did there, such as trying to "dispose" of the asbestos by leaving in a part of the tunnel they were not going to demo before an explorer blew the whistle on them.

Had a quick meeting Thursday at the hospital, they're up to 50-55 graves. I was told they're stopping there & will continue with this line of graves in 2013 when the next phase starts with the demolition of the Allen building. it will take about 2 years until they are re-interred in the cemetery, the University of Kentucky does a full exam & report on the remains. I was told any photos are forbidden, probably don't want people seeing the actual remains & getting pissed at the state.
Where the guy from UK is standing is a grave, you can kind of see the difference in the dirt.

It's starting to look more like a mass grave scene from Europe after WW2

| Do they have any idea how long ago they were buried there? Could have the burial spot been forgotten?

According to the University of Kentucky people, they are from around 1840-1860. At one time they probably had markers for the graves that were likely removed for whatever reason in the past. Patients were the ones that did the burials, so record keeping for the oldest graves was pretyy spotty until the 1880s when they had to notify the state of a death. Most don't have coffins, they were probably just wrapped in cloth. One looks like he/she was buried in a sitting position.

A few photos from Wednesday, only got yelled at 3 times. I was told I'm not allowed to post any photos publicly without written permission from the state etc. but the paper had some without any permission so disregard that. So no one gets mad I wont post the photos with any bones in them.
More mud & plastic

Working on a grave, they have to do this for each of the 50+

I agree, this is quite interesting.
I see in the back ground that it looks like a wing is missing off the side of that brick building. Are they continuing demo on other parts of the campus?

| Demo is stopped for now, mostly because they're running out of money. The piece you see of that one building is where they had planned to start preserving that wing.

| As of Monday they've removed about 12-14 sets of remains. There are some that were stacked on top of each other which slowed things down a bit, along with the weather. The state has finally agreed to allow a large memorial marker with the names of patients buried on the property. We have about 1,000 names so far, a long way from being complete unfortunately. I spent part of Monday going through death certificates just to get names, it's not nearly as simple as I thought it would be! It appears that they didn't always fill out a death certificate when a patient died, and that only covers from 1911.

Sad to hear that it's going to be hard to identify some of the patients due to the hospital not always filling out the death certificate.
I've been reading The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic and they state that the hospital some time in the past removed most of the metal grave markers leaving only the ones for the civil war veterans. They said they did this to make mowing easier, but now the spot looks like a farm field. So it would be nearly impossible to identify who's buried there.

It seems to have been mainly an issue at Eastern State to skip the paperwork, the other 2 state hospitals always have many typed out nice & neat, nothing left blank. Haven't read that book yet, but seems that happened at more then a few state hospitals. Maybe WSH could correct me, but I recall their cemeteries having no markers but the state claimed the have maps that show where the patients are and who they are.
On a good note, had a meeting Tuesday with the state & they finally agreed to put up a memorial with patients names buried on the property. We're probably going to do a design competition with the local universities & high schools then go from there. of course doesn't mean they'll release any records without a court fight, but it's a start.
Spent a couple hours again going through death certificates Friday. Here are 2 very different examples of what I run into, 1 from ESH & the other from Western State at the sametime period, pretty obvious. Note the patient from WSH had been there for over 60 years when he died.
