Interesting info Driver, we've had very little information come out of Western or Central State for some reason. A former employee told us several years ago there used to be quite a few wooden markers that were pulled up in the 1970s & left to rot in a corner. Are the headstones that were found readable at all? Looking forward to more info!

I have a question for those of you out there who have researched state hospitals. I have learned that a great-uncle of mine was a patient at the Eastern Lunatic Asylum, Lexington,KY from Sept. 1907 until his death of TB in 1913. He was buried at the asylum. Some members of the family have suggested that due to his being from the mts. of Eastern Ky. where no facilities would have been available for a poor man suffering from TB that he may have been sent to the Lunatic Asylum. I am trying to research to see if he had a mental illness or if TB was the issue. Any thoughts on this? Thanks. Diane Brads

It's confirmed, as much as it can be with the state involved, that there were 170-175 sets of remains recovered from the site previously mentioned. We had a meeting with the state about it, not much came from it. There are more but they cant afford to dig farther. Keep in mind, this was a very small area of the project. An old employee told me several years ago that anywhere there's asphalt there are graves.

I requested each set of re-interred remains get a marker of some sort and someone from the state said "Why, what purpose would this serve? Their coffins will have a small plaque and the University of Kentucky will have a GPS map showing where they are". I guess that's their way of saying "this never happened".

Recently we've found 20-30 patients that died in the late 1940s-early '50s that died at ESH and were donated to the University of Louisville. No one knows what happened to them, the files only list them as "buried". Most of them were African-Americans. Probably part of an ugly past, who knows.

Anyway here's a few recent death certificates I ran across. One for a patient that I'm pretty sure didn't belong at the asylum, he just couldn't speak English from what I read. Two more for infants, maybe not for easily offended. I've asked the state to acknowledge the two buried at ESH as infants, no reply.

Here's the one for Sam Zegna, they never knew where he was from or what was wrong with him, other then he spoke no English

Another two of the infants that were buried in the cemetery with no records.

Beckweth was born to a female patient, his cause of death is questionable and the mother vanished.

The second one was born to a patient that later died (1931) and was buried at ESH. No info if they were buried in the same place.

Sunday there was a memorial service for Pvt. Houston Clouse. He served in the Civil War & was discharged and ended up at Eastern State for "severe headaches". It's likely that he was suffering from PTSD, all his medical files are missing, of course. He was buried at the cemetery at ESH but like everyone else there, his grave is unknown. Fortunately the family was able to get permission to have a marker installed at Camp Nelson National Cemetery. The Sons of Union Veterans came out for the ceremony to give him a full honors service. Odds are there will be more like this for other veterans buried in the ESH cemetery.

This kind of seems like a fishy past that the state seems to want to cover up. Keep us appraised with the latest stuff you find out.

Do you know if they are still doing tours? I just moved to Lexington and I would love to take a tour before it is all gone for good! Does anyone have a phone number to call?

I'll email a map of the phases of demolition and the projected dates. Right now they're a bit behind doe to the budget, weather and the unmarked graves.

Found out 2 weeks ago that there was an intact coffin with a name on it found during last years project with the 170 unmarked graves. For some reason we were never informed about this find, although someone at the state level told me it was due to patient privacy. They always manage to find new ways to surprise and confuse me. Anyway, it is likely from the late 1850s-early 1860s. Currently it's in refrigeration at the coroner's office until they decide to open it (that's another discussion). Here a couple photos that were shared with me anonymously. In case you're wondering the casket is made of iron & the first name one the plaque is Thomas but the last name isn't so easy to make out.

For Veteran's Day this year we weren't able to get the VA or the Sons of the Union Veterans to come out for a ceremony at the cemetery. A volunteer group Bugles Across America was able to help us out. They arranged to have someone come out and play "Taps". Michael Sobieski III & his dad came from Louisville, and he did a great job to provide a simple sign of respect for the unknown veterans buried there.
