By the early part of the 20th century Hokitika had two large hospitals at the northern end of the town: the Westland general hospital (foreground) and the Seaview psychiatric hospital (back right), which both served the whole region. By the beginning of the 21st century both hospitals had been closed, and the nearest hospital was in Greymouth.
