NOTE: Philipsburg State Hospital was one of many hospitals built for coal miners in Pennsylvania, these hospitals were also referred to as state hospitals, this hospital was not a psychiatric facility.


Philipsburg State Hospital served as a state general hospital until eventually being closed and turned private. The original buildings have been demolished and it now operates as the Philipsburg Area Hospital. Like the other the other State General Hospital is most likely began as a hospital for Miners.

Philipsburg State General Hospital was divested from the state in 1991 and operated for several years as Philipsburg Area Hospital. It filed for bankruptcy in 2007 and eventually closed. As of 2010, after reverting to state ownership, the state is attempting to sell the property.
