History

The State Psychopathic Institute in Chicago, a collaboration between the state and the University of Illinois Medical School, served as a clearing house for processing patients to the state hospitals. The care of psychiatric patients was essentially containment for the more seriously disturbed patients, but many languished at home in despair. The practice of diagnosis and treatment was rare in Chicago, dispensed mainly in neurological programs and offices.
