History[edit]
The McDonough County Almshouse, where chronically ill and homeless residents were cared for, was built in 1884 two miles southeast of the square, at the intersection of roads 750N and 1300E. The magnificent Queen Anne-style structure was 144 feet across the front and had 85 rooms, including 50 bedrooms and 2 dining halls. It was the last building constructed by William O. Thomas, the most important Macomb builder of the 19th century. In 1949, it became the Elms nursing home, and it was torn down about 10 years later.
