The A.L. Bowen Center was opened in 1965. For most of its time as a developmental center, A.L. Bowen was lead by A.J. Schafter as superintendent. The Bowen center was part of The Illinois Department of Mental Health zone five which it shared with [[Anna State Hospital]]. The Institution was relatively small compared to some other state schools in Illinois with it having about 157 residents around the time of its closure in 1987. The Bowen Center was closed in 1987 due to state Budget cuts. Today it is the Illinois Youth center Harrisburg. It serves as one of the secure medium-security Level 2 facilities for the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice. | |||

The A.L. Bowen Center was opened in 1965. For most of its time as a developmental center, A.L. Bowen was lead by A.J. Schafter as superintendent.
