In 1948, the state of Nebraska authorized an interchange of facilities among the state hospitals and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine for teaching and treatment purposes. This authorization resulted in the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute (NPI) a teaching, research and intensive treatment hospital, operated jointly by the Nebraska Board of Control and the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Construction of NPI was completed in 1955 at the cost of $1.5 million. NPI housed 92 beds, a special research ward, laboratory, day therapy for children and adults, and facilities for the intensive study of psychiatric problems in children.
