Replacing facilities at the county poorhouse, the county asylum had a 120 patient capacity with 108 patients in residence in 1892.  By 1921 capacity was estimated at 225. In 1972 the present facility was opened replacing the original hospital. As of 2026, the Fond du Lac County Department of Human Services operates an Acute Psychiatric Unit, which is a modern, entirely different facility from the historic asylum.

History

Replacing facilities at the county poorhouse, the county asylum had a 120 patient capacity with 108 patients in residence in 1892. By 1921 capacity was estimated at 225. In 1972 the present facility was opened replacing the original hospital. As of 2026, the Fond du Lac County Department of Human Services operates an Acute Psychiatric Unit, which is a modern, entirely different facility from the historic asylum.
