Stannington Sanatorium was the first purpose-built children’s TB sanatorium in the United Kingdom. The Sanatorium was established at Stannington, ten miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, by The Poor Children’s Holiday Association (now Children North East) in 1907. It was able to achieve a very high success rate in prevention and cure of tuberculous children by providing a combination of the latest medical equipment and techniques and providing patients with healthy food, fresh air and exercise. In 1947 the Sanatorium, formed part of the new National Health Service and continued to treat tuberculous patients until the mass availability of effective antibiotic therapies at which point the Sanatorium began to be used as a general children’s hospital.
