In 1883, discussions were made concerning opening a state hospital since the state's only mental facility in Indianapolis had become overcrowded. A 160-acre farm was purchased in October 1883, and an additional 121 adjoining acres were donated by the citizens of Cass County. Plans & specifications were submitted on May 26, 1884. The next year, the Administration building, a 3-story structure of Victorian architecture, was built at the center of the ridge (cliff) in the maple grove.
