History
Riverside State Hospital, or North Brother Island as it is commonly known, was uninhibited until 1885 when the city of New York purchased the Island to construct a quarantine hospital for people with diseases that included smallpox, typhoid, polio, measles, diphtheria, and scarlet fever. Many patients from the Renwick Small Pox Hospital were relocated to North brother Island.
