History
Established to be a world-class mental health system, the clinic served as a training and research center, housing 145 beds (later around 170) and providing crucial care for mental health, substance abuse, and emotional disturbances. The facility was shut down in 1992 by Governor John Engler as part of a broader shift away from state-run, long-term institutionalized care. Following its closure, the loss of these, 170 beds has been cited as a significant reduction in Detroit's mental health treatment capacity.
Beginning in 1996 the building was repurposed as the Woodward Academy. In June of 2017 Woodward Academy closed, its charter revoked due to low test scores and financial problems.
