1891-A second mental hospital, Eastern State Hospital, opened at Medical Lake, near Spokane. It was intended to relieve severe overcrowding at Western State Hospital in Steilacoom, and to satisfy demands from eastern Washington legislators for a state charitable institution east of the Cascades.
