History
The Clinton County Poorhouse, later called the infirmary, was founded in 1835 on a 100-acre tract east of Wilmington on Fife Avenue. Between 1840 and 1901, residents who died without family or burial means were laid to rest on the infirmary farm in an area referred to in records simply as the “burying ground.”
Over time, the infirmary land underwent major changes. Portions became the county Engineer’s Office, the dog warden’s facility, the highway department, farmland, a former airfield, All Children’s Park and the Rails to Trails bike path.
