History

Discussions began to focus on phasing-out the Fort Custer State Home in 1969, a residential institution for mental retarded individuals who are temporarily located in the former military hospital and barracks at Fort Custer (near Battle Creek, Michigan). The buildings were declared fire and safety hazards. The home had been leased on a temporary basis from the U.S. Army since 1956, and population counts at the facility reached 1,200 residents and 710 employees
