History
Discussions began to focus on phasing-out the Fort Custer State Home in 1969, a residential institution for mental retarded individuals who are temporarily located in the former military hospital and barracks at Fort Custer (near Battle Creek, Michigan). The home had been leased on a temporary basis from the U.S. Army since 1956, and population counts at the facility reached 1,200 residents and 710 employees
