History

The Posey County Poor Farm, also known as the Posey County Infirmary, was a county-administered institution in Indiana that provided care and shelter for the poor, elderly, and disabled from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The asylum occupied a 30-acre site that now houses the Posey County Jail and Highway Department. Residents adhered to a daily routine, worked on the farm, and lived in dormitory-style accommodations, with males and females/children separated into different wings.

The farm was closed as Indiana transitioned to more modern social welfare systems. The building was demolished in the 1970s due to negative perceptions surrounding the facility, with ex-residents facing stigma that followed them throughout their lives.
